U.S. President Andrew Jackson's Nashville estate, known as The Hermitage, stands as a historic landmark and museum today, welcoming visitors to tour the building and grounds to learn more about this great president as well as the life and times of Americans during the period. The Hermitage is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The home was originally built under Andrew Jackson's guidance and supervision in 1835 in a scenic location between the Cumberland River and the Stones River, just 12 miles from where downtown Nashville stands today. The grounds span 1,000 acres and feature slave quarters that at one time housed as many as 44 slaves, as well as the main house with eight rooms and a beautiful Greek Revival style of architecture. Sitting in a quiet location on the beautifully landscaped grounds, you will find the tombs of Andrew Jackson, his wife Rachel, and their two infant children.
Since 1889, The Hermitage has been open to the public as a museum, and it regularly draws in over a quarter million visitors who want to learn more about the Antebellum way of life as well as this great U.S. President. With your admission to The Hermitage, you can enjoy a guided tour of the mansion, slave quarters, tombs, and garden areas. The tour includes a costumed historical interpreters who will serve as your guide and answer questions as you progress through the grounds. You will also want to take some time to explore the vast array of information on display at the Andrew Jackson Visitor Center. Here, you can also enjoy a 15-minute film about Andrew Jackson and the Hermitage as well as periodic special exhibits about the family and the estate. A typical tour of The Hermitage may take approximately two to four hours, so plan to wear comfortable walking shoes as well as weather appropriate clothing as some of the tour is outdoors. A gift shop, picnic tables, and restaurant are also located on-site to add to your convenience during your visit to The Hermitage.
